Commemorative hand-carved breadboards and wooden kitchenware

Pub Shed Sign.

Posted on

I was contacted by Charlotte in the Spring and asked if I could create a Pub Shed Sign as a secret present for her Husband. She supplied the artwork.

She liked the idea of a natural edge sign about 12" (30cms) across with black lettering and deep relief carving of the central design. I glued 3 pieces of Oak together to create the blank for the sign, then started  carving it.

This is stage one with the design on the blank.

In stage two I used a Router to remove the central background. The rest of the carving was done by hand using traditional tools and techniques.

Stage two, background routed away.

Ready for painting and oiling, it was fun to do!

"It’s for our house – my husband Ben has turned his shed into a (very basic) pub. It’s a bit of a thing between a few friends, with a record player and bar etc. I thought it would be fun to have a proper sign outside. This is perfect....."

Hello Steve, The breadboards just arrived in perfect condition--and they are simply beautiful.  The exquisite wood grain is as striking as the pattern you see on the back of a violin or a really fancy guitar. I love the way the central round is distinctly raised above the border. The deep gutter for crumbs is a genius idea. And the carved wheat stalks are so graceful. What more can I say? Aha! The heft of the boards is very satisfying. Have a wonderful Christmas and count none but the happy hours in the New Year. Thank you,
